There was a good news from Nepal that the Nepali Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) and Nepali Communist Party (Maoist Center) have resolved their differneces. Both Parties fought the December polls jointly. They got 174 seats out of 275 in the Parliament. If they had acquired 10 more seats they could have had 2/3 majority. UML got 121 seats, whereas Maoist got 53 seats. Both the parties had common Manifesto and Common Front but after getting the results they seemed to fall apart. Prachand from the Maoist party was hopeful of wining more number of seats. Though the number of seats won were more than double by Khadga Prasad Oli from UML. When Oli took an oath as the Prime Minister of Nepal Maoist declined to join the cabinet. It was obvious that if this cleavage continued, UML government could be short lived or fall without the support of the Maoist party. But now both the parties are united and the new party will be called Nepal’s Communist Party. This party will also have their governments in six provinces out of seven. We now hope the period of one -year government is over. Nepal finally has a government that will run for five years continuously. Both the parties have entered a seven point agreement.
Oli and Prachand will be the twin Presidents of the party. For the first three years Oli will run the party and government as the PM and for last two years Prachand will be the Prime Minister. If this agreement continues then it will certainly benefit Nepal. But it is said that all this happened owing to the China’s political strategy. If this is so, the communist government of Nepal could become a source of worry for India. Previously, during Oli’s one year tenure, he was known to have moved closer to China which unhinged the Modi government. However, a few days ago Sushma Swaraj, Foreign Minister of India met him in Kathmando. India should have a positive and creative attitude towards Nepal and Nepal should reciprocate it.
